DISSIDENT VOICES
These works serve as a counter-point to the scroll, ROLL CALL. The voices inscribed on the speech ribbons that accompany each of the single figures come from women, feminists, and the spiritual/Goddess movement that started in the 60s. They were the foremothers of movements that challenged, confronted, critiqued, and deconstructed issues of God, religion, church, sexuality, and the body while simultaneously questioning the placement by ecclesiastic masculinist minds of women in relation to God, church, their bodies, and the sacred. Each speech ribbon represents a particular voice.
While the voices of feminist theologians and goddess worshippers and spiritual feminists still strain to become common place in how we relate to and talk about the sacred, at least now, by the 21st century, women in the West no longer need fear being burnt as witches for speaking the truth of their hearts, minds, and bodies. By using the words of these courageous thinkers in these images I pay homage to their courage, intelligence and capacious hearts.
The figures bend, stretch, arch, or twist to emphasize their rising above and deviating from the ideas and ideals that historically curtailed the fullness of womanbeing while simultaneously expressing the freedom their own words release. Their nudity stands for the naked truth.
