Fried Contemporary launches the first Fried Autumn Art Fair

Posted on 18 March 2013

Following the tradition of the annual Summer Exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts in London, Fried Contemporary Gallery in Pretoria launched the first Fried Autumn Art Fair (FAAF) on Saturday 16 March 2013.

For FAAF 2013, the gallery encouraged a diverse range of artists in the various media such as painting, sculpture, drawing, mixed media and photography to enter. Close to 300 entries from throughout the country and as far as Zimbabwe were received. The selection was done by an adjudication panel consisting of Guy du Toit (professional artist), Leana van der Merwe (lecturer, University of Pretoria) and Elfriede Dreyer (curator, Fried Contemporary).

The exhibition opened with over 200 selected works and prices range from R1000 ' R5000 creating a welcoming environment for both seasoned collectors to scout new talent and first time buyers to start their art collection.

'I do not want Art for a few any more than I want education for a few, or freedom for a few.'

William Morris, Artist

According to Dreyer, the comprehensive exhibition presents high quality contemporary works from both emerging and established artists such as Natasja de Wet, Carla Crafford, Karin Lijnes, St John Fuller, Erna Bodenstein, Lynette ten Krooden, Marina Louw, Sarel Petrus, JFC Clarke, Collin Cole, Loeritha Saayman, Gordon Froud, Alet Pretorius, Thelma van Rensburg, Eric Duplan, Georgie Papageorge, Amita Makan, Majak Bredell, Gretchen Parrock and more. She stated FAAF is a move away from curated shows featuring established artists to an inclusive art fair showcasing quality artworks and growing talent from Pretoria and surrounds.

The Autumn Fair will aim to grant more exposure to young artists entering the market and exhibit what is happening in all areas of the contemporary art world in Pretoria and throughout the country. FAAF runs until 13 April 2013.
