About The Artist

Artist Photo

A Namibian expat, Dahla Hulme busies herself with art that has a utilitarian purpose in addition to decoration.

She lives in the small Eastern Free State town Rosendal, where she frequently encounters forsaken farm implements and countless things that are used up, worn out, outmoded and discarded but in a way part of our heritage because it passed through people's hands.

The beauty of these abandoned materials inspires her to capture something of the past and make it part of the present. Using these found objects in combination with the Free State’s ubiquitous sandstone, blocks of weathered wood as well as bovine skulls and bones, she creates ageless art pieces that serve as tables, fruit dishes, murals and freestanding garden sculptures. With these unique assemblages she elevates humble castoffs to solid objects that stand proud in their capacity as modern functional art or sculpture.
