About The Artist
I grew up on a farm in the Eastern Cape and currently live on a smallholding north of Pretoria. My prefered medium is oil on canvas, although I also create collages and installations with found objects.
Through my paintings of architectural interior details I wish to share with the viewer moments when I found exceptional beauty within ordinary surroundings, and I consider the transformative properties of light. I study the contrast between reflected, filtered, and artificial lighting on interior details and how these alter our constructed spaces. That which is familiar and mundane becomes strange and new as I guide the viewer to literally view what is well-known in a different light.
In my physical collages I combine alchemical metaphors and the literary genre of the fable with aspects of the human psyche in order to comment on the human condition. Ink and sallt backgrounds of chance and chaos become theatres in which the drama of human interaction and the creation of meaning unfold. These constructed vignettes reflect the hidden corners of our minds where our fears are posed against our fantasies.
