Pilgrim Act I

Ruhan Janse van Vuuren
TITLE: Pilgrim Act I
MEDIUM: Patinated bronze on Sandstone
DIMENSIONS: 2200mm x 900mm x 900mm
EDITION: 1

Pilgrim is inspired by the idea that all memories are personal truths. They are housed in the mind of the individual that remembers them, and they inevitably become questionable legends. Janse van Vuuren challenges this idea in two ways in this work.

Firstly, he takes it upon himself to actually question these personal truths in relation to a dogma of decency. He questions the extent of the inheritance of memory becoming a creation of identity. Secondly, he plays with the idea that there is a high expectation that everyone will be an individual and that a person will have high expectations. However, not much direction is given to us about what aspirations to have or how to achieve them – the only thing that we are every really sure about is that to achieve we should aspire to work hard.
