Beautiful Imperfections in the Sculptures of Ruhan Janse van Vuuren

Posted on 28 July 2016

South African sculptor Ruhan Janse van Vuuren's unique figurative artworks are both technically apt and visually engaging. He models his sculptures from everyday people, each figure containing imperfections that draws one closer, creating works that are real and human.

Born in 1981, Janse van Vuuren and developed an interest in three dimensional objects whilst at the Jacqui Theron art school. He further pursued his artistic path by studying Fine Art at Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria, under renowned artist Jan van der Merwe. His works often deal with the parameters that define the young Afrikaner and modern plasticity of mass production and consumption.

"For the last couple of years I have experimented with the idea of building and destructing. This process of construction / deconstruction relays the tiered notion of beauty - in its constructed form the sculpture is aesthetically pleasing, but there is the abandoned hope and beauty in the destroyed too," says Janse van Vuuren.

Janse van Vuuren's process is one of constant push and pull where he forms then deforms his figures and in some cases adapts one work into another. The uncertainty of the outcome is the only thing that the artist can be certain about.
