![]() Umkhangu/Birthmark11 September 2025 - 10 January 2026 Participating: Sthenjwa Luthuli From 12 September, Umkhangu/Birthmark will be open to the public, bringing together a powerful and deeply personal body of work by South African artist Sthenjwa Luthuli. Born in 1991 in KwaZulu-Natal, Luthuli is a self-taught printmaker, celebrated for his meticulously carved wood reliefs and woodcut prints, enriched with oil paint, charcoal, and mixed media.
Through intricate patterns and layered symbolism, Luthuli’s work moves beyond portraiture to meditate on identity, cultural tradition, and African spiritualism. The title Umkhangu, translated from isiZulu as “birthmark,” is drawn from the exhibition’s hero artwork and speaks to more than a physical mark. In many African traditions, a birthmark can signify ancestral presence, spiritual purpose, or a unique destiny. Here, it becomes a symbol of guidance and belonging, a reminder of the invisible histories we carry.
The exhibition spans works created between 2010 and the present, including an impressive new series. Each piece invites reflection on how the body remembers, resists, and reconnects with the spiritual dimensions of ancestry.
