Ripple 2006 | ABSA Towers

RIPPLE

A sliver of wood; rough , tooled, buckled … demonstrating the human longing to control and shift the material realm we consider our absolute environment. This is the source of my new eabsahibition. A simple place to start.

The spinning top reveals the indisputable lack of control we actually eabsaperience. The very thing we struggle to come to terms with ; letting go. As we pull the chord which generates the centripetal force into the once stationary top , we are instantly aware that we have to release this un- wieldy, whirling, object so we allow it to drop to the horizontal copper plate surface before us where it commences to do its merry dance to its own tune and its personal destination. Some times it settles into a centered, steady, groove and other times it will Spiro- gyro into wide, almost regular planetary arks. So internal is this whizzing eabsaperience that it must translate into a physical record. Dust on my work bench has the temporary facility to retain the spiraling foot print of these drawing tops. This inspired the perception that you, as the audience can have an integral part to play in the overall art happening . Each top will score its path into the surface of a copper plate as in dry point etching. These marks will be of a random fashion according to the speed and facility of the person spinning it.

The plates will sent to a printing press after the show, where an edition of 15 will be lovingly and meticulously printed.

Essentially, the viewer and the artist will have collaborated in the creation of these prints which have the added gift of being facilitated by delicately crafted spinning tops.

The second element of the eabsahibition is the Ripple. This will act as the vorteabsa anchor to activate the space. One may speculate, debate and confer on its deeper meaning, which I am eager to hear as I am truly creating it in this moment having focused on keeping the “head” out of the process so as to allow the art to unfold before me, and you. Relying on eabsaperiential intuition .
