Art Exhibitions

29 October 2022

Participating: Qhamanande Maswana | Nkhensani Rihlampfu & Richard Ketley

Qhamanande Maswana | Extraordinary People

Qhamanande Maswana draws inspiration from the people and communities around him, whether they be close family and friends, or strangers with whom his life has little overlap. Despite this minor crossing of paths, the character and individualism that Maswana experiences ignites his creativity. He professes to create whole lives and stories in his head about the subjects of his work, feeling compelled to record them in paint. Maswana’s ongoing Extraordinary People series is the archive of these characters who have struck the artist so impactfully. We are delighted to be exhibiting a small selection of them in our
upstairs gallery space.

Nkhensani Rihlampfu & Richard Ketley | Destination re-adjusted

Destination re-adjusted is a meditation on journeys, both past and future. Nkhensani Rihlampfu and Richard Ketley have collaborated to create an exhibition that illustrates the unpredictability of our lives, the challenges with which we wrestle, and the victories stumbled upon. As colleagues and friends, both artists work at the Eloff Street Studios in Johannesburg, and have united to present a joint exhibition at 99 Loop.

Rihlampfu’s sculptures, tilting and bound in rope, represent the inner demons that plague us, hindering our ability to see a clear future in which we can achieve goals and dreams.

Ketley, by contrast, has created a series of large-scale paintings that embody the erratic nature of life’s pathways. His artworks are painted on a piece of tarpaulin, taken from a truck which has traversed the roads of Africa. Before this, the tarpaulin depicted cosmetic advertisements on a billboard. Now, it is home to the bright colours and wild patterns indicative of Ketley’s style. With lines dissecting one another, and the use of vivid colour, these pieces create the sensation of movement and change that is so often true of the passage through life.
