In Greek mythodology,a phoenix is a long-lived bird that is cyclically regenerated or reborn. It obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor. Thus the phoenix has become a reference to symbolize renewal in general. For example, it can be used to describe something which has been restored in an alternative guise.
Analogous to this notion of the phoenix, Willie has taken aspects of his earlier ideas and works which have become 'seeds' from which he has propagated what we now see around us. In other words, like a phoenix, these current works on exhibit are the results of regeneration - of rebirth - of something that came before.
