Toy Rebels (Today we’re having our pictures taken)

A close friend of mine, recently spent 6 months in Sudan (currently under civil war) as part of the peacekeeping forces. Her many accounts shook me deeply. She solemnly laughs while telling me how she, under strict command not to take any pictures, eventually, as fearful situations became more and more everyday, started to sneak up on rebels to steal quick snapshots for remembrance and substantiation. Their individuality is lost beneath their hostile demeanour. She is known for always helping the needy, taking pictures of everyone she meets and painting her nails in eccentric colours.
