Two Exhibitions

28 July 2022 - 3 September 2022

The weight of a stone
Curated by Thobile Ndenze and Lemeeze Davids
With a focus on materiality, the show initiates an exploration around different states of earth – the stoicism of cement, the richness of clay, the sturdiness of metal, the infinite darkness of the mine, the pigmentation of soil, the fragility of glass. ‘The medium is the message’, writes communication theorist Marshall McLuhan. What does it mean to give attention to the stuff of this world, and to allow the material to sit at the forefront of an encounter?
Thandiwe Msebenzi - Radical Makazi
“Radical Makazi (makazi meaning ‘aunt’ in isiXhosa) is a character inspired by my Aunt’s story, intersecting with my own stories and those of other women.”
An ongoing project by Thandiwe Msebenzi, Radical Makazi unfolds as a series of chapters that were first published on Instagram in late 2020 as a collection of images accompanied by texts. Told through these short narratives, the story of Radical Makazi is an archive of Apartheid history that documents the strategies of resistance by Black women in South Africa.
