This, That and the Other: Carpe Diem

9 November 2023

Participating: Nirupa Sing

Nirupa Sing is a South African artist and educator working over a span of at least three decades. In that time, her works have been shown in both group and solo exhibitions, both in South Africa and internationally.

Having grown up during the Apartheid era, her work has looked towards expressing symbolically, the tenuousness between the surrealistic illusion and harsh reality of this unnatural state and the consequential social distortions, tensions, connections and towards understanding the ultimate common humanity under the surface.

Social commentary, personal reflection and the transformation of feelings symbolically, continuously weaves its way into the fabric and texture of her paintings, monoprints, installations and mixed media artworks.

She has a BA (Fine Arts) honours and an Honours (English) in Literature, from the then University of Durban- Westville, subsequently absorbed into UKZN, post Apartheid. Much of her facilitation and teaching were at community based education centres such as FUBA and CDP and more recently at a government secondary school. She has experienced artist residencies at the Vermont Studio Centre, USA in 2004 and GAV,New Delhi, India in 2006. She was invited and accepted the honour of representing South Africa at the first pARTage International Art workshop in Mauritius, in 2004.

The economic challenges of regular income, being a single parent, meant that she regularly had to abandon her creative pursuits to work full time to ensure that she and her son always had a roof over their heads and were never destitute. She is now finally following her passion, as she has always wished.
