This body of work is born from free-form self-expression and the solace I find in colour and paint. The subconscious imagery that continually emerges is both figurative and landscape-based, allowing me to explore the body and the land as central motifs. The land becomes a space where my mind can meander—representing an escapism—while the body reflects the coming to terms with the physicality of my experience. These dual elements serve as a means to tell stories of an alternate world, shaped by and in contrast to the reality of feeling caged in and debilitated by a lack of independence and mobility during three years of serious health challenges. A large part of abstract painting is problem-solving—creating a composition that harmoniously balances spontaneous actions in the form of shape, texture, colour, and space. This act mirrors my need to resolve a situation over which I have no control, but which, through painting and the expressive use of colour, I can navigate and transform. I believe successful abstract work provokes the viewer's eye to perceive imagery of meaning from a seemingly random and chaotic context—an experience that invites the imagination to play. Salience refers to the ability to notice something significant—a pattern or form that stands out from its surroundings.
