Potters of the Month

7 September 2021 - 25 September 2021

Featured potters for September 2021:  Elize van Zyl & Claire Waters
Elize van Zyl grew up in Roodepoort and lives in Centurion where she has a pottery studio.  She studied social sciences and economics at the universities of Pretoria, South Africa and Johannesburg and holds a master’s degree in social sciences from the University of Johannesburg.
In 2007 Elize started painting as a hobby and enrolled in an informal art class where discovered her love for abstract work and the possibilities posed by the combination of different media.  At the end of 2019 she left the corporate world for good to continue learning and practising pottery in her studio.  She has spent the last two years exploring designs and the combination of techniques, materials and colours to create both decorative and functional pieces.  Her love for flowers is an influence and a recurring theme in her work.  It is especially evident in this spring collection.
Claire Waters draws inspiration from ancient art, craft and ornaments of the world, as well as plant and animal life. Her work is hand built and includes both sculptural and ornamental as well as functional objects. An avid experimenter in the medium, she uses inclusions such paper, fabric, plant matter and animal dung, which burn away in the firing process. More recently, she employs digital imagery and text in a transfer process directly onto clay.
Born in Zimbabwe and raised in Johannesburg, she ran her own graphic design business for 20 years before practicing as an artist full time. With no formal training, her career prior to 2010 spanned many disciplines in the creative industry including illustration, stencil cutting, silkscreen printing, embroidery design, technical drawing, and finally computer aided design and graphic design.  Since 2013 she has won awards at Ceramics South Africa regional and national exhibitions, and her work has been widely collected and exhibited.
