Polarity at Association Of Arts Pretoria | Art.co.za Art Exhibition Listings

The Association of Arts Pretoria will exhibit works by Annemie Odendaal and Loeritha Saayman under the collective title Polarity. Seen through the lens of the Zodiac’s grand cycle of life, their art works were created using different mediums and techniques.

Apart from the four elements of astrology namely Fire, Earth, Air & Water, the twelve signs of the Zodiac cycle are also divided into six groups known as polarities resting on opposite sides of the Zodiac cycle. So do the birth signs of the two artists. While polarities may have similar goals and values, the polarity-quality focuses on the differences between their approaches to life, and in this instance, their approach to the process of art making.

Loeritha Saayman obtained her degree in Visual Arts at UNISA. In 2000 she opened the Brooklyn Fine Arts Studio. She was at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, France for three months at the end of 2015 and again in 2019 when she had the opportunity to show her work at Tour du Monde and 14H. Her mixed media work is traditionally painting in combination with spent paint, collage, and other recycled materials. This technique expands her formal approach, towards a more experimental and explorative way of creating. In addition, it embraces the concept of opposites and unity.

Annemie Odendaal spent a three-month art residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, France in 2020. Her work consists of hand-coloured linocuts, bronze and mixed media. She is inspired and fascinated by the human spirit and employs a multimodal, intermedial process by using her origami rabbit Lapine the flaneuse as inspiration.
