PAINTING BENEATH THE SURFACE1 June 2025 - 3 August 2025 Participating: Brent Dodd, Saskia Osborne and Eloff Pretorius Painting Beneath the Surface is a group exhibition featuring the work of three art teachers from Maritzburg College, who, beyond their roles as educators, are deeply invested in visual arts as a personal and expressive practice. This body of work explores painting as an act of unlearning - a process of breaking away from rigid structures and rediscovering creative intuition. Some works explore painting as a tool for self-discovery, allowing the artists to navigate identity, memory, and personal histories through the fluidity of paint, while others’ works reflect on painting as a means of grieving, offering a space where emotions, loss, and healing unfold in layers beneath the surface of the canvas. The act of painting has a long and rich history as a means of depicting abstract and in-articulable truths through metaphor, mark, or colour. This exhibition contains a visually diverse body of work, unified by the process, unlearning and personal growth of the artists. It affirms the value of the incomplete, the uncertain and the incremental steps along the path of artistic growth. A winding path that is not linear and often turns back on itself, offering opportunities for revision and reinterpretation.
