Ordinary Women Extraordinary Spirit

3 October 2020

The White River Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition by Felicity Bell, exploring the human psyche through a new collection of 30 portraits. In particular the exhibition focuses on the extraordinary characteristics that are naturally inherent in the female psyche - remarkable resilience, ingenuity, humour, creativity, courage, perseverance - that are accessed in dealing with everyday challenges and adversities.

The gallery is excited to share that the exhibition includes a portrait of renowned Ndebele artist Dr Esther Mahlangu, who has recently been honoured by President Cyril Ramaphosa as one of three South African icons celebrated on National Heritage Day.
Dr Mahlangu was born in 1935 near Middelburg, and is one of the country’s most treasured creative gems, revered for her passion and significant efforts in preserving the Ndebele culture and traditions through the her process of art. In particular, Dr Mahlangu is highly respected for her efforts in education, using her art as a medium to teach and pass traditions and culture for future generational preservation.
She received her honorary PhD from the University of Johannesburg on 9 April 2018.

The portrait of Dr Esther Mahlangu by Felicity Bell, has been a process spanning almost 2 years. Facilitated by Helene Smuts, (co-founder of Africa Meets Africa),  Felicity and Dana MacFarlane , (curator of the WRG gallery) were privileged to meet and converse with Dr Esther Mahlangu in April 2019 at her homestead in KwaMahlanga. Over a two day period, a series of images of Dr Mahlangu were taken by Felicity as reference for the planned portrait.
The portrait was commenced in 2019, and took almost a year to complete.

The painting serves to honour our much- loved globally acclaimed figurehead, epitomizing her extraordinary characteristics, and to highlight Dr Esther’s efforts to educate and promote the importance of her heritage through the process of art.
We thank all the individuals and officials involved in making this journey possible.
