Lines of Remembrance

26 July 2025

Participating: Izaan Joubert

Lines of Remembrance is a quiet, tactile meditation on memory, loss, and the traces we leave behind. Through sculptural wall tiles and delicate trinkets, this body of work invites viewers to reflect on the fragility and beauty of the stories we carry — both those we speak and those we keep silent.
This exhibition of ceramic works by architect turned artist Izaan Joubert will be opened by Hendrien Horn.
With an architect’s sensitivity to form, space and rhythm, each piece is shaped by hand and marked. Lines, textures and subtle surfaces become metaphors for moments remembered, transformed or lost. Imperfections are embraced as part of the visual language - echoing how life, too, holds beauty in its brokenness. The pieces speak to something shared - the universal experience of holding on, of making meaning from sorrow, of remembering through gesture and form. Arranged like constellations across the wall, the works become sites of stillness and connection.
Izaan Joubert completed her master’s in architecture at the University of Pretoria in 2011. In 2020, tragedy struck when Izaan lost her little girl to cancer. Seeking solace and healing, she turned to art and ceramics as a means of navigating her complex emotions and preserving her daughter's memory. Her art became a deeply personal and cathartic journey. She has taken part in several group exhibitions in both South Africa and Namibia, and her work was accepted into the prestigious National Ceramics Exhibition in 2024.
