Three Solo Exhibitions6 May 2024 Participating: Madoda Fani | Adam Birch | King Houndekpinkou Madoda Fani
Madoda: Let Us Now Praise Famous Men Madoda Fani's new body of work is a mapping of urban Black masculinities, challenging hetero-normative narratives of the township Black man in South Africa. Madoda: Let Us Now Praise Famous Men sees the ceramicist re-imagining ubiquitous domestic objects in clay. Fani deconstructs reductive cliches of Black masculinities, re-fashioning them with masterful skill in the making of his intricately carved earthenware forms.
Adam Birch Like Something Almost Being Said Adam Birch's second solo exhibition of functional timber sculptures emerges from an idiosyncratic and embodied conversation between object and maker. His practice roots itself in a honed and intimate understanding of the language of trees. The corporeality of his finished works presents a strange, visceral experience: wrestled into sleek submission, his forms are refined to a point that belies the arduous, deeply physical process demanded of their making.
King Houndekpinkou Six Prayers Franco-Beninois artist King Houndekpinkou's large-scale ceramic sculptures revel in unexpected hybridities, the product of a diasporic world-view that resists cultural borders. Known for his distinctive vocabulary of shape, texture and colour, Houndekpinkou has developed an explorative practice that blends tradition and ancient spirituality with modern techniques, drawing heavily from Japanese and West African culture.
