Here tomorrow Gone today

6 May 2021 - 17 June 2021

Although we are those people, the hazy lenses of nostalgia often involve a wistful memory of a time that now, in retrospect, might seem better or simpler. Beloved things, such as old TV shows, places, smells or even symbols or even idols from a different era may evoke nostalgia. A select group of artists were posed the question: What are your triggers and which elements will you leave behind? Which colours, patterns, old technology, people, scenes or paraphernalia activate your sense of nostalgia?
One of the featured artists is Jaco Snakehead Venter, drummer of the band Fokofpolisiekar. Most of you might already be familiar with his sensational photography, the rest of you are in for an artistic bonanza. Jaco has the exceptional skill of presenting compelling works of black and white art with a backdrop of our own world. Yet nothing about our homegrown rock star's background has been humdrum – especially not through the lens of his camera. The curated selection of artistic, small 'Limited Edition' photographs will take you all the way from backstage to Bellville in one go.
Another exciting dynamic is that of the trio, Marchand, Conrad Botes and Anton Kannemeyer. Greatly influenced by the duo's well-known Bitterkomix and its illustrative excellence, Marchand employed many of their styles and symbols in the formation of his own energetic oeuvre. Subsequently, much of the Fokofpolisiekar brand vibe is indirectly inspired by this unofficial collaboration. Other rising stars exhibiting are Andel Olivier, Keneilwe Mokoena, Elmarie van Straten and Ella Cronjé.
GalleryOne11's brand new guest curator Jeanne Hugo kicks off with this star studded show exploring the rebel roots of nostalgia.
The exhibition 'Here Tomorrow, Gone Today' pays particular homage to the unique inspiration of a bygone South African era. Whether it be life on the road as a band member, childhood comic heroes, other artists or paintings, our younger selves or the kaleidoscopic spectrum of influence and inspiration: Our collective visual stories are repeatedly molded, laundered, reinterpreted and now presented in this once-in-a-lifetime exhibition.
