Two Solo Exhibitions
30 September 2021 - 23 October 2021
99 Loop Gallery is delighted to announce two new solo exhibitions.
Showing in their downstairs space is an original body of work by South African artist, Emma Aspeling. Titled Enfold, the show comprises a series of abstract paintings that encapsulate Aspeling’s signature style. By way of mixed media and a skilled hand, Aspeling brings her inner world to paper and board, forming a bold and gestural proclamation. Through poetry, Aspeling describes Enfold as:
“A declaration of love to myself
Marks, colours, movements
Between here and there
Free and connected”
The upstairs space is host to Robert Hamblin’s solo exhibition, I Just Told the Stars Who I Am. The show marks Hamblin’s first with 99 Loop Gallery and comes off the back of his critically acclaimed memoir, titled Robert - A Queer and Crooked Memoir. Using ink and bleach, Hamblin explores notions of gender identity and body image, specifically as they relate to his experience as a transman. As his chosen materials bleed into each other, so too do Hamblin’s depictions, which start out as self-portraits, but become something more fluid as they simultaneously corrode and reform through the process. In talking about his work, Hamblin states:
“I can’t stop painting, stripping and repainting until the faces and bodies in my work show the history, loss, joy, bruising and understandings that feel honest about my experience of being a man, or let’s rather say of being human.”
