 ON OTHER POLEIS5 July 2024 Participating: Sikho Siyotula-Siegemund ON OTHER POLIES stems from Siyotula-Siegemund's doctoral thesis Visualising Southern African Late Iron Age Settlements for the Digital Age. It draws on the cultural production, circulation, reproduction, and theorisation of illustrations accompanying archaeological, anthropological, and historical Southern African Late Iron Age Settlements research. The show focuses on the visualisation of five settlements namely: Mapungubwe and Bokoni in South Africa, Khami and Great Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe, and Mayikeni in Mozambique. It is proposed that as with the authority of Eurocentric 'formative interpretations' of Southern African Late Iron Age research currently under review, visualisations accompanying Late Iron Age research can and should be critically relooked at within appropriate visual cultural methodologies.
