There is a certain appeal to buying an artwork without knowing who the artist is. You can now find quality work from emerging artists who you may not have known about yet. This is what Warren Editions offers through their Edition S series. Each year, an artist is chosen to create a work in the printmaking medium for Edition S. The identity of the artist is kept secret and announced after the pre-release date. On 1 December 2015, Warren Editions will announce the the name of the 2015 secret artist and release Edition S. The paper size is 36 x 38cm with an edition of 60. According to Zhane Warren, printmaker and owner of Warren Editions, the Edition S is an excellent way to start or add to your art collection at an affordable price, just in time for Christmas.
Warren Editions, based in Cape Town, is a professional printmaking studio that publishes and prints fine art prints, specialising in the intaglio techniques of etching, photogravure and photo-polymer, as well as monotype, relief and silkscreen. The studio collaborates with established and emerging artists such as Sanell Aggenbach, Hanneke Benade, Jan Henri Booyens, Katherine Bull, Tom Cullberg, Jean de Wet, Georgina Gratrix, Marlise Keith, Gerhard Marx, Maja Marx, Bangikaya Maqoqa, Brett Murray, Christian Nerf, Vulindlela Nyoni, Jody Paulsen, Matty Roodt, Lionel Smit, Michael Taylor, Hentie van der Merwe, Toon Verhoef, Max Wolpe and Ina van Zyl.
At the beginning of this year, Warren Editions became the first studio in Africa to be able to do the photo etching technique of Photogravure. This challenging technique involves an intaglio printmaking or photo-mechanical process whereby a copper plate is coated with a light-sensitive gelatin tissue which had been exposed to a film positive. The process is uniquely rewarding in its richness of tones and quality that one cannot achieve digitally. This year's Edition S will possibly feature the use of the unique Photogravure technique.
'Edition S' is a platform to develop and circulate emerging artists. Warren Studios chooses artists which resonate with the studio. The artist do not need to be printmakers but their work must hold an interesting translation visually and technically into print. Previous artists featured in Edition S were Marlise Keith (2009), Coljin Strydom (2010), Julia Rosa Clark (2011), Heleen Schroder (2012), Jean de Wet (2013) and Jody Paulsen (2014).
