 Vanitas16 October 2021 Participating: Christiaan Diedericks, Shui-Lyn White, Maryna Joubert, Susan Grundlingh and Lothar Bottcher The themes of vanitas and memento mori or memento vivere deal with imagery as a visual reminder of the ephemerality of human existence. Typical imagery includes skulls, flowers, fruit and beautiful young women, suggesting mortality. Already in the 17th c. the themes became popular in a religious age when almost everyone believed that life on earth was merely a preparation for an afterlife. However, contemporary artists continue to explore this genre.
