Hold Fast: A Digital Exhibition of Lockdown Paintings

 Living la vida lockdown
Upon arriving back sooner than expected from my artist residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, in order to get home before the last-minute border closures and the national lockdown, and unable to access my studio, I started painting in my kitchen.
I put out a call on social media for images from the lives of friends and acquaintances during their sheltering at home, a situation where most have unable to leave their homes, or go outside only under strict regulations. As I had to go straight into self-quarantine on my arrival from France, I haven’t had a chance to see any of my friends or family in person since December 2019. So, in a way, this project has been both a good way of peeking into the lives of others under conditions of social distancing, and connecting with each other.
Our lives have become focused on the small ill-defined spaces we have had to make for ourselves for cooking, working, cleaning, fearing and dreaming in our entirely altered daily lives. For most, the outside has become just a picture framed by a window. The works are also an homage to the resilience of so many people under these difficult circumstances.
I have chosen to donate 50% of sales from this series of works to Food Flow ZA, who provide fresh food to communities in South Africa whose children normally rely on school feeding schemes for meal support, while additionally supporting local small-scale farms
