Armageddon It

15 February 2020

I have always been fascinated by the concept of Armageddon. The end of the world. The landscape of the final times. With these drawings I have borrowed from science fiction illustration and the comics of Jack Kirby and Moebius (Jean Giraud), as well as Ancient art like Greek Kouros figures, Egyptian Old Kingdom sculpture, ancient Japanese sculpture, Assyrian and Greek reliefs and so on. These are fantastical landscapes with gods and monsters, giants and devils. There are also recurrent references to medieval portrayals of hell. The work also suggests my inner struggles with my own personal demons.

The first of my drawings of this kind were made when my younger son asked me to draw something for him. Most of these showed giants/monsters enjoying a cup of tea. The desert landscapes with volcanoes came later. Most of the drawings involve flights of fantasy and make-believe. This is very different from my usual work, which is based on observation. I felt that I had absorbed so much art in my lifetime that I wanted to create something from imagination, informed by memory – something otherworldly, whimsical, ironic and impulsive. Nothing escapes the eye and everything is laid down in memory. What then emerges on the other side is the legacy of time and experience.
