Rites of Passage: Birth, Death and every Dam Thing In-between

Rites of Passage: Birth, Death and every Dam Thing In-between, is due to coincide with the Cape Town Art Fair in February 14 – 16  February.  This challenging and provocative show will be curated by the controversial art critic Lloyd Pollak who is notorious for his defiance of political correctness and readiness to call a space a spade. This event will involve all his favorite artists most of whom have never exhibited at Gallery One11 before. The show addresses the theme of rites of passage and revolves around all the agony and the ecstasy we experience during the many climacteric turning points we confront as we live out our mortal span. Birth, baptism, confirmation, puberty, coming-of-age, sexual initiation, graduation, courtship, engagement, marriage, parenthood, retirement, old age and death are all grist to the mill. Hopefully the show will advance our understanding of the human condition and reveal how we can most wisely negotiate all the crises and dilemmas that arise from the many drastic changes inherent in our life cycle.

My African Wild Dogs

Gallery One11 believe that contemporary art spaces should accept social responsibility, promote dialogue and create safe spaces to engage the community in meaningful dialogue that can potentially improve all our lives. That is why we chose to display Jean’s mixed media sculptural ensemble My African Wild Dogs which addresses ecology, overpopulation, sexual abuse, xenophobia and many other issues of pressing universal import.
