Convivial

2 February 2020 - 28 February 2020

The artist is self-taught, born in Johannesburg, South Africa. Known for his portraits, Hersch is fast becoming celebrated on both the local and international art scenes. He portrays mostly children in his portraits. He experiments with colour and positive messages that reflect the youth of his subjects, the diversity of their experiences and the world that surrounds them. He creates pop-style contemporary portraiture using a range of mediums including pencil drawing, charcoal and painting.

Ari Hersch’s art started to appear on the art scene from 2013 at Arts on Main in Johannesburg. The year 2019 was a breakthrough for the young artist: he gained wider recognition in South Africa, with representation by the acclaimed Daville Baillie Gallery, and also established an international base with the support of a gallery with branches in Dubai and Tel Aviv.

Inspired by pop culture, Hersch often includes influential movie stars, fashion designers, supermodels, artists, musicians and well-known South African influencers into his work.

Hersch has been passionate about art since a very young age, and has worked tirelessly on honing and refining his skills over the last decade.
