Nostalgia

22 January 2020 - 21 February 2020

Nostalgia -noun. Described as a feeling of pleasure and also slight sadness when thinking about things that happened in the past. A wistful or excessively sentimental yearning for return to or of some past period or irrecoverable condition?

When the term 'nostalgia' was first coined, the condition of 'living in the past' was thought to be a disorder, rooted in depression. Thankfully no longer. In fact, nostalgia has many benefits. In a 2013 article written by John Tierney in the New York Times, he highlighted a few positive attributes attached to Nostalgia (as studied and tested). Mainly that it has been shown to counteract boredom, loneliness, and anxiety. It makes people more generous towards strangers and seemingly more tolerant of others. Oftentimes nostalgia helps people feel closer to those they share memories with. Scientifically proven, nostalgia can literally make one feel warmer in the cold. But it can also have a more painful side.
