Art Exhibitions

31 October 2019 - 16 November 2019

From the 31st of October the Henry George Gallery will be stripped of all furnishings, clutter and colour to allow our light to fall upon the intriguing new photographs by artist Michael Meyersfeld in his solo exhibition “n o t i o n a l.”
Michael’s exploration into abstraction is a search for some peace: a place to stop and ponder. A place to be still.
Rather than being a photograph “of something” this body of work is, like an artist’s sketchbook, a study in mark-making, texture, sensuous form, light, contrast and duality. Bare of almost all distraction, the viewer is nudged to uncover a memory or emotion that an image stirs within them – moving them to reflect, and respond, in their own personal world. Zoomed in, and removed from context, we are guided into noticing and mindfully appreciating the oddly beautiful forms and intriguing patterns surrounding us all the time.
His work is notable for its stark, sometimes sombre, lonely and edgy imagery that has separateness from reality. Previously, his work involved the staging of people in structured scenes portraying mans’ emotional and behavioural patterns. This exhibition marks a deliberate move away from that, into abstraction, and a literal un-staging – with his images being found, rather than made. In this exhibition we join the artist on a journey which has brought about a deeper, more personal, engagement with life.
In a world of so much, Michael creates for us a stillness.
