Potter of the Month

Catherine Mweemba Kabwe was born in Kitwe, in the copperbelt province, Zambia in 1968. In 1985 she met Martin Kabwe. At that time he was a studio pottery student at the Mindolo Ecumenical Foundation. Catherine and Martin were married two years later.  In 1993, the family relocated to Botswana where Martin was to assume a managerial position at Pelegano Pottery.  When he took over the business in 1996 and changed the name of the business to Gabane Pottery, Catherine got involved in the family business where she is deputy director. She started learning pottery hand building techniques such as coiling and slab work under the tutelage of her experienced husband.  Within a few years she was making big garden pots and became the sole supplier of tandoori ovens in Gaborone.  Later she moved on to making smaller more detailed unique pottery pieces that were inspired by the chitenge fabric, the natural African landscape and traditional designs adapted from the mud huts and basket ware typical of Botswana.
In 2011 tragedy struck and Catherine was diagnosed with cancer. She underwent a six weeks regime of radiation and chemotherapy. After recovering from the harsh effects of the treatment, she resumed her pottery creation with a newfound hope, strength and zeal. She started playing around with more vibrant and livelier colors and glazes, and more complex patterns. To mark the remission of her cancer, Catherine hosted a solo exhibition in their pottery studio in December 2016. In 2018 she became a member of Ceramics Southern African (CSA). Catherine and Martin had the opportunity to showcase their work for the first time in South Africa at the Sandton Potters Market in November 2018, hosted by CSA. Catherine has also exhibited her work at an exhibition hosted by Alliance Française, Gaborone in April 2019.
