Warp, weft, woof

27 September 2019

Sasol New Signatures finalist in 2010 and 2011, Maria Pienaar, presents her latest exhibition Warp, weft, woof as from Friday 27 September 2019 at the Pretoria Arts Association.   She grew up in Winburg, Free State, studied in Pretoria and now resides in White River.

The body of work on show is an attempt to rediscover photographs of a specific social unit:  her large and extended family.  She states: “Photographs can die.”

This results from nobody taking time to peruse these captured memories.  People, places and objects depicted might be gone or altered beyond recognition. Paraphrasing André Bazin her aim with the re-working, stitching and adapting of some chosen snapshots is to preserve these images from a second spiritual death.

“Stitching, like weaving and every other craft that uses thread, communicates on a silent and deep level through fragile connections and tactile experience; reading a textile entails an entanglement of sensory modes.  By not using words the structural processes-cum-textures allow the encoded ideas - and with it memories of people and places - to come to the foreground.”
