Messages from a bottle
12 September 2019
Messages from a Bottle is an art exhibition that features a series of red wine portraits on paper and ballads that I have composed to express my view about the social issues in my community, especially the rampant plague of alcoholism.
In this series of portraits I used dry red wine to paint portraits of ordinary community members who are battling and self-medicating with alcohol. I use this unique medium as a method of investigation into their personal story and journey, as a way to reflect and engage with the hope of finding a better understanding, starting a dialogue and engaging them and the community at large.
My idea is to use wine as a metaphor and a lightning rod to engage my community on the pertinent issue which transcends cultures. At the same time I am shining a positive light on my community as a source of hope, because I am turning their portraits into artworks that carry a powerful social commentary, showing that although they are ordinary community members their presence can be used to transform the minds of other people and hopefully themselves too.
I am intending on touring southern Africa and the rest of the continent with the same message because my story translates throughout the townships and ghettos around Africa, and the rest of the world.
