Two Solo Exhibitions

99 Loop is delighted to introduce two new exhibitions: ‘Happy Birthday, Jesus!’ by Fanie Buys and ‘It’s Irrelevant Too’ by Craig Smith. The opening will take place on Thursday the 26th of September from 17:30. The shows will run for a month, closing on the 26th of October.
Fanie Buys | Happy Birthday, Jesus!
‘Happy Birthday, Jesus’ is emerging artist Fanie Buys’ second solo exhibition at the gallery. Declaring Christmas to be Jesus’ birthday was one of the great joys of Fanie Buys’ childhood. For him, Christmas is a thing of fascination and adoration- the ritual of it, the domesticity, the theatre. This love for Christmas and its oddities has endured becoming the central focus of his most recent exhibition which features obscure Christmas scenes. Ultimately, the artist aims to rearrange the innocuousness of a secular family Christmas into something both off-putting and at the same time, alluring.

Craig Smith | It’s Irrelevant Too

‘It’s Irrelevant Too’ is self-taught artist Craig Smith’s first solo exhibition at 99 Loop Gallery. The title of the exhibition comes from the comparative irrelevance of modern life which one notices when reality is suspended for a moment and all the background noise and visual clutter fades away. The ambiguity and abstraction of Smith’s painted surfaces offer a chance for viewers to connect with the experience of contemplation and discovery. Ultimately, the exhibition aims to make everything else become irrelevant, even if just for a moment.
