Speculative Inquiry #1 (On abstraction)

8 August 2019 - 24 September 2019

This small exhibition is a speculative inquiry that consider the contributions of living black women artists and the potential their practices and work stand to contribute to studies on abstraction. While no way exhaustive, this inquiry also complicates the materiality by stretching abstractions modernist connection beyond ‘traditional’ concepts around painting and sculpture. While the works in this iteration may for the most part still be read as painterly, this is deliberating in order to expand the reach of the question and incorporate practice that a narrow framing might otherwise invalidate.  A follow up enquiry will take up the question of sculptural abstraction.
