The Absence of Colour

14 June 2019

The title refers to no prominent rainbow colour to be discerned.  Based mostly on white, the pair sets out to explore a variety of matter associated therewith.  White is an amalgamation of all colours and inherently positive.  It’s evocative of everything that is good.  Their works use a prominently white foundation.  Valeria applies wax to create “memories and ghosts of past” and Will uses paper for “memories and stories of the past”.  Both work with mixed media in a way that evokes emotion and tells a story.

They set out to explore a feeling of mono-colour:  how the mind associates with objects and emotions and fills-up the space of colour in between what we see and what we think we remember.   As white portrays perfection, their works contain some symbolic shapes and numbers, the first of which is the number three, which is the number of good fortune.  Past, Present, Future - “Everything happens in threes.”

Also present is the number four, which is considered a perfect number, the number of ‘being’, connecting the mind, body and spirit with the physical world of structure and organisation. Four seasons, four directions, the four sides of a square.  The square could portray masculine traits.

Lastly they employ the zero, the circle, which symbolises inclusivity of the universe’s totality, the sacred and divine, infinity, revolution, completion, cycles and perfection.  The circle could represent traits of the female.

Both artists’ works are mostly inspired by the beauty of nature and patterns.  The exhibition promises to be unusual and exciting and art lovers and collectors should mark the event on their calendar in bright red.
