When the Dust Settles

Winner of the 2018 Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Visual Art, Igshaan Adams (b.1982, Cape Town) presents a new body of work titled When Dust Settles in Main Exhibition Room of the Tatham Art Gallery The exhibition will be opened on Sunday 9 June at 11h00 by art lecturer Wayne Reddiar.
With a strong focus on storytelling, the exhibition delves into the personal histories and lived experiences that are inscribed on the materials Adams works with, in particular the sections of vinyl flooring upon which can be found as the residue of daily life.
These marks suggest that physical space is embedded with memory and can be interpreted as a manifestation of our interior lives.
Constructed from cotton twine woven onto garden fencing, the sculptures on When Dust Settles appear like ghostly apparitions that stand in contrast against the vividly patterned and colourful vinyl installation. Although abstract, the forms have an anthropomorphic quality - figures or creatures that sit between the real and imagined.
