23 May 2019

On the 23rd of May The Henry George Gallery will be dramatically transformed for Benjamin Skinner's solo exhibition: WOOLGATHERING.

The gallery invites you to descend into their space and experience this exhibition designed, at first, to provoke, confront and discomfort. The gallery itself becomes the artist's elaborately built set, contrasting the refined with the depraved - the nude figures, rough textures, fine details, dirty light and layered expression so characteristic of his images saturate the gallery. Through the creation of this fertile environment we seek to allow a situation to grow and create something of its own direction, allowing the viewer - the participant - to escape to a different time, a different feeling, a different realm.

The rich layering is continued into the work itself, with the photographs in Ben's distinctive style printed onto silk, almost a century old, and hand stitched into frames made by the artist. The collection includes photographs laid into timber and glass display cases - like cabinets of curiosity - the images delicate and translucent in their depiction of an unlikely beauty.

The opening reception, Thursday 23 May from 7pm, will provide the opportunity to indulge in all the extravagance of this exhibition - including performance, installation and a first look at the photographs on silk. Please note, however, that the exhibition features sensitive content and is not suitable for children.
