Stilled Lives II

For this exhibition at the Association of Arts Pretoria, Johannesburg based artist, Karin Preller, selected paintings reflecting her ongoing interest in the relationship between painting, photography and memory through the prism of family snapshots and stills from home movies, mainly of the 1960s and 1970s.

More than an engagement with nostalgia, the interaction between painting and photography is pivotal to Preller’s work.  Painstaking manipulation of paint on canvas is the very antithesis of the ephemeral fragility of the snapshot.

Known mainly for her photo-based paintings referencing pictorial archives such as family albums, still life remains an ongoing interest.  Exhibited together, the photographed object and the ‘photograph as object’ interact with each other, emphasising both the nature of still life (as memento mori – reminders of the fragility and transience of existence) and of the photograph as already an object; as already a ‘still life’.

Preller practiced law before pursuing a career in art.  After completing a BA Fine Arts (with distinction) at Unisa and an MA Fine Arts (with distinction) at the University of the Witwatersrand, she lectured in art history at Unisa and other tertiary institutions.  She is currently registered for a D Phil in Art and Design at the University of Johannesburg.

The artist has had a number of significant solo exhibitions since 2001and her work is represented in various corporate collections.
