RECONNECT

Ingrid Bolton’s solo exhibition entitled Reconnect explores the tensions between the binary opposites of chaos and structure, connectivity and disruption, man and nature, technology and art.  Using connective cables as metaphor to investigate our reliance on structured systems of communication, Bolton creates intricate cityscapes which simultaneously speaks of technological advancement and destruction. How we define our contemporary society is integrally linked with how we employ technology, how we communicate and connect ... and cables.

These cables are cut at a 90-degree angle, revealing the inner core of exquisite patterns and a microcosm of potential constructed realities, poignantly reproduced as cityscapes made from the very material that our ‘civilisation’ is built on.   For Bolton, a cable’s secret interior also bears similarity to how we communicate, always hiding something, never revealing all.  So too many activities associated with recycling are multifaceted, reflecting some of the complexity involved in both processes. Recycling basics stand on three legs reduce, reuse, recycle, are all present in some form or another in Bolton’s work.

Scouring electronic waste sites for cables and materials to use in her metaphorically rich artworks, Bolton has become intensely aware of how easily objects are discarded, and yet, how much value they still retain.  Although contemporary consumers have become more conscious of recycling, it still remains a rather haphazard mindset for most people.  Bolton’s work not only speaks to our moral and ethical obligations to be responsible custodians of the world’s limited resources but also challenges the traditional aesthetic notions associated with producing art.
