White Light

Following on the success of his Exhibition Harmonia at Standard Bank Gallery, Johannesburg and at Cavalli Estate, Somerset West, Gordon Froud shows a new and subtle twist on geometry, landscape and form in this show titled White Light.
Often associated with bright pop art type works and colours, Froud stripped down to black and white for Harmonia – in White Light, he further strips down to white only. Making use of embossings from photopolymer printing plates, offset drawings on white transfer paper and LED lights, he creates works that are both intriguing and visually beautiful and subtle to the eye. The mysterious images (lit with LED lights from the sides in box frames) of geometry imposed on nature have an other-worldly feel about them that is almost dreamlike. The complex geometric drawings again place white on white in backlit frames allowing for layering of drawing over drawing.
The final piece on the show is a large geometric polyhedron in welded steel mesh (another signature with which Froud is associated) powder coated in white. The play of light on the perforated mesh casts ethereal shadows and renders the 'solid' form almost transparent.
The show is a visual play on white as colour and light and ultimately form.
