A transnational exhibition of art that explores different cultural responses to the HIV pandemic, with a curatorial focus challenging narratives of separation and alienation. The exhibition includes representation of art from the Visual AIDS Artist+ Registry, the largest database of works by artists with HIV/AIDS, together with works by artists deeply impacted and living with HIV from South Africa and beyond.
Visual AIDS: Challenging Narratives is the display presentation of MC Roodt’s Visual AIDS International Curatorial Residency, a month-long residency with New York-based visual art and HIV awareness organization Visual AIDS, in collaboration with Residency Unlimited, DADAA, and Free State Arts & Health.
TACIT curated by Elani Willemse
TACIT commemorates the collective artists who have been affiliated with the fine art studio and bronze foundry, Dionysus Sculpture Works (DSW), since its establishment in 1996 by the sculptor Angus van Zyl Taylor
. First functioning as a finishing school for young aspiring sculptors, artists have had the opportunity to mentor and hone their skills within the studio space. The integration of artists and the opportunity to work with knowledgeable sculptors has been of paramount importance with regard to tacit learning within the studio environment.
Today the studio serves as a creative hub where artists and sculptors alike can come together in an interactive space to share and grow as contemporary creatives. Although DSW continues to evolve in size and technological equipment, its ethos of respect for materials and the pursuit of knowledge in the tacit form remain.
