Immure

Exploring the relationship between imprisonment and aesthetic, Minien Hattingh's mixed-media works display the female figure's destiny and voice - or lack thereof, primarily comparing the female figure to the nightingale.

Encumberments, namely corsets, chastity belts, crinolines and chopines restrict movement and freedom and this leaves them trapped in a cyclical demise.

The nightingale's song becomes the author/ artist's song/voice. If a nightingale is caged it refuses to sing, similarly a female cannot thrive in a caged disposition, and so there exists a devaluation of the self, whether bodily, psychologically or emotionally.
